Kids These Days

Kids of Live ArtsA theater full of babies is definitely more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Our thanks to the 40+ parents, wranglers, and hang- ers-on who spent an hour together on the set of Mother Courage and her Children getting everyone ready for their closeup. At the crucial moment, we all backed away slowly so photog/phe-nom Jason Lappa could fi re off 83 shots in under 30 seconds. He captured 22 friends aged 5 weeks to 6 years…Live Arts and her Children. Represented are the next generation of every single theatrical discipline: from Board member to set designer, usher to actress—and even a couple of future newsletter editors.

SOME BABY MILESTONES AT LIVE ARTS:

December 24, 1992: the first Live Arts baby, Garnett Schuyler, born to Karen and Mark Schuyler, board members and volunteers (Garnett is now 6’ 3”.)

August 16, 1997: Boomie Pedersen gives birth to J.D. while directing Three Tall Women at Live Arts (not exactly simultaneously; Boomie missed three nights of rehearsal; mom and son attended every other rehearsal and performance together.)

October, 2004: Harper June Tidwell is the first baby named after a character in a Live Arts play. Her mom, Jennifer Hoyt Tidwell, played Harper in Angels in America, Part One while five months pregnant with Harper June.

July, 2006: Actress Shawnna Pledger knows she is pregnant when cast in Urinetown: The Musical and gamely climbs scaffolding and dances up a storm. Everyone (including Shawnna and husband Steven
Levine) is surprised a few months later, when Shawnna gives birth to twins!
