Doubt, September 19-October 11, 2008
Description:
John Patrick Shanley’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play takes two nuns, a priest, and the mother of one pupil into enticingly tense vignettes. Staged with economy, simple conversations hint at larger issues and ask questions that hardly ever have convenient answers. From director Fran Smith: “Father Flynn in his opening sermon says, ‘Doubt can be a bond as powerful and sustaining as certainty.’ This timely topic inhabits our lives, from our mistrust of government, the news media, doctors, and religious leaders. Once the seed of doubt is planted in any mind and challenges the ethics of people we’ve been taught to trust, our sense of security breaks down… Theater’s role in the purest sense should mirror the society from which it comes. Shanley’s play does this in a profound way. His writing brings theater back to where it needs to be. It makes us think. It makes us question.”
