NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT
Music and Lyrics by George and Ira Gershwin; Book by Joe DiPietro
July 15th to 31st 2016
Directed by Mike Long
NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT is a new musical comedy by Tony Award Winning author Joe DiPietro (MEMPHIS, ALL SHOOK UP). The script marries the screwball comedies of the 1920’s and 1930’s—the ones featuring bootleggers and playboys and chorus girls—with classic tunes of George and Ira Gershwin. DiPietro calls it a musical about all the good things in life: music, laughter, and falling in love.
It’s a modern twist on classic comic archetypes, that recaptures the past in all its toe-tapping glory while making audiences laugh out loud in the process.
Songs like “Someone to Watch Over Me,” (usually sung by a dewy-eyed ingénue) are now sung by a dewey-eyed ingénue dressed as a bootlegger and brandishing a rifle. The boys do get the girls, but here the girls wind up with all of the power and every character in the show learns to find his or her joy.
This production is a Live Arts Teen Theater Company production.
