WHAT WILL YOU DO AT THE AUDITION?
At auditions, the actors will play games and get to know the director, Claire Chandler. In addition, there will be readings from the script. There is a link to the readings we’ll be using below. There are 4 “sides” in all–sides being theater-speak for readings.
The sides are chosen to represent the various character groupings in the play:
the four young lovers
the Athenian workmen (Bottom et al)
The first side also includes Theseus, Hippolyta, and Egeus.
There are printed copies of these sides outside the 4th floor office at Live Arts in the black mailbox marked Miller Murray Susen. If you would like paper copies prior to the audition, feel free to stop by and pick some up M-F between 9am and 5pm.
The actors are not expected to memorize anything in these sides for the audition. It would help, however, if they had read them over and had some sense of the language and passages we’ll be using.
CONFLICTS? At auditions, you will be asked to write down your schedule and any known conflicts for the rehearsal and performance period. Bring your calendars, please!
BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PLAY:
One of Shakespeare’s funniest comedies, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is a whirl of romantic mix-ups and mischievous magic. This specially adapted condensed version is perfect for actors aged 10 to 13, and the relatively small rehearsal time commitment is designed to make this experience accessible and low stress for busy kids.
We encourage everyone to audition and participate. It will be most fun and truthful if we have a nice mix of actors of different backgrounds, ages, and ethnicities.
NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR: I extend an invitation to all teenish type kiddos aged 10-13 to audition, whether they’re Shakespeare pros or have never heard of the guy in tights. No previous theater experience required, only an open imagination and a willingness to have fun! Please email Miller at miller@livearts for more details and with any questions. –Claire Chandler
