About The Fringe
The Edinburgh Festival Fringe is the largest performing arts festival in the world. In 2023, the Festival welcomed more than 3,400 theatrical productions featuring more than 23,000 artists performing in more than 40,000 performances in one of nearly 500 venues across the capital city of Edinburgh, Scotland. There is truly nothing like it in the world.
Live Arts works with WorldStrides which produces two festivals within the overall Fringe: The American High School Theatre Festival (ASHTF) and the International Collegiate Theatre Festival (ICTF). We help schools from across the US to manage and produce their productions in Edinburgh.
About the Team
As the “tech team,” our job is to prepare the theater spaces (build truss, hang lights, build seating, wire in sound systems, etc.) and shepherd each production through its tech and performance schedule. Our team ensures that everything runs safely and smoothly for each production, including lots of handholding and cat herding. The 2023 team welcomed over 500 student performers in 32 performing groups over three venues. We prepped, “teched,” and managed 124 shows in just over three weeks. It can be exhausting, but ultimately it is extremely rewarding to help students master this transformative experience!
We support our team through training and development of technical skills. We cover the costs of airfare, housing, paid public transportation, and a per diem.
The team is chosen early in the calendar year for the following August. However, it is never too soon to volunteer at Live Arts to obtain, sharpen, and demonstrate your abilities!
