Description of the Play:   At Thanksgiving, the Blake family gathers at the run-down Manhattan apartment in Chinatown of Brigid Blake and her boyfriend Richard. Brigid’s parents, Erik Blake and Deirdre Blake, arrive from their home in Scranton, Pennsylvania, to have dinner with Brigid, Richard and Aimee, their other adult daughter. Brigid is a musician and Aimee is a lawyer living in Philadelphia. Aimee has recently broken up with her girlfriend and has developed an intestinal ailment. Also present is Erik’s mother Fiona “Momo”, who has Alzheimer’s disease. The parents are unhappy that their daughters have left home and have abandoned their religion. The family members must deal with “aging, illness, and a changing economy”.

Cast Breakdown:

ERIK Male, 60s. A middle-class Irish Catholic, practical to a fault and very set in his ways. He has sacrificed a great deal over the years in order to provide a good life for his family, but his recent confession has upset the comfortable world he knows. He is trying desperately to reconnect with his wife and cling to his increasingly distant daughters.

MOMO Female, 80s. (the character is in her 80s, the actor may be 60+ for auditions),  Erik’s mother, grandmother to Brigid and Aimee. Has been afflicted with dementia. For the most part, she remains passive and disconnected but has episodes where she becomes manic and aggressive.

DEIRDRE Female, 60s. Erik’s loyal wife, devoted mother to Brigid and Aimee. With silent strength, she clings wholeheartedly to traditions, familial duty, and the Catholic faith. The institution of marriage is sacred to her; she very much wishes her family shared this sentiment.

AIMEE Female, 20-30. Erik and Deirdre’s eldest daughter. Both self-conscious and self-deprecating, her career as a lawyer once held great promise. Now, her physical and emotional health both suffer. She is deeply, quietly sad and in intense pain following a breakup from her long-term girlfriend.

BRIGID Female, 20-30. The younger daughter of the Blake clan, well-meaning but often impractical and dreamy. She has recently moved in with Richard and turned her back on Catholicism, much to the chagrin of her parents. She is half-heartedly pursuing a career in music and attempting to live out her perception of a sophisticated adult lifestyle.

RICHARD Male, 30s. A worldly-wise graduate student, Richard comes from a wealthy family and has never wanted for anything. Despite their age difference, he truly loves Brigid and yearns to be accepted by her family.

TO RESERVE YOUR AUDITION TIME:  Please email marian@livearts.org. She will be delighted to help you choose the best time for you and reserve you a spot.  She will also send you a script and audition information. If you cannot attend auditions, please email her anyway, as she may be able to schedule a different time for you.

To Prepare for Your Audition:

The director wants you to have read the entire script.  Then, come in with a personal story based on Napoleon Hill’s six basic fears: the fear of poverty, fear of criticism, fear of ill health, fear of loss of love of someone, fear of old age, fear of death.

Please Be Early – there will be forms to fill out, and we may get ahead of time!

Conflicts?  When you sign up for auditions, you will be emailed an Audition Conflict Calendar and asked to look at the conflict calendar and note any known conflicts for the rehearsal and performance period.  Please print this at home, and bring it with you to auditions. (If you can’t print it, we’ll have more hard copies here at Live Arts.) Please do not email it back; just bring it in. Once you have marked your conflicts, we expect you to stick to the times you have indicated that you are available – so please double-check all vacation and work conflicts BEFORE your audition!  Thank you!
