Launched in 2023, WATERWORKS celebrates new theatrical voices in Charlottesville and beyond! This festival of new works puts the playwright at center stage and diversifies the stories told on the Live Arts stage.
The 2024 WATERWORKS festival includes a range of new works including our spotlight shows:
AH WING AND THE AUTOMATON EAGLE by Brandon Zang, a steampunk alternate history retelling of the 1877 San Francisco Chinatown riot.
NEEDVILLE by Sara M. Robinson. In the fictional coal town of Needville, a poet channels exploited miners, dying canaries, guilty consumers of coal-fueled electricity, and even the voices of the mountains themselves.
BLUE RIDGE MAMA, an original musical by Ti Ames, is set in Charlottesville and based on the playwright’s own life and ancestry.
This year’s festival also features LOCALLY SOURCED, a showcase of one-act plays developed by the Live Arts Playwrights’ Lab, and sponsored by long-time champions of local playwrights Pam Friedman and Ron Bailey, Geri and Bruce Schirmer. Community DEEP DIVES sponsored by Hankel-Citizens Insurance. Plus readings, workshops, and much more.
