Presented by The Madwoman Project
17 May - 2 June, 2024
Director: Adrienne Oliver
Launched in 2023, WATERWORKS celebrates new theatrical voices in Charlottesville and beyond! This festival of new works puts the playwright at center stage and diversifies the stories told on the Live Arts stage.
WATERWORKS is sponsored by The Madwoman Project and Open Hands in memory of Live Arts co-founder Michael Parent.
The 2024 WATERWORKS festival will include our 2023 Emerging Artist Award-winners:
AH WING AND THE AUTOMATON EAGLE by Brandon Zang | A steampunk alternate history retelling of the 1877 San Francisco Chinatown riot.
THE COLOUR WOMAN by Petron Brown | A new play juggling with the intersecting themes of colorism, immigration, and Caribbean folklore.
Next year’s festival will also feature LOCALLY SOURCED, a showcase of one-act plays developed by the Live Arts Playwrights’ Lab, sponsored by long-time champions of local playwrights, Geri and Bruce Schirmer, Pam Friedman and Ron Bailey. It also features BLUE RIDGE MAMA, an original musical by Ti Ames. Plus readings, workshops, and much more to be announced!
General auditions for WATERWORKS will take place Saturday, February 24, 12-4pm. Check our audition page for more information.
