MISSION

Forging theater and community.

VISION

Live Arts welcomes, engages, inspires, entertains, and challenges local artists and audiences with theatrical productions that range from the classics to new works, from traditional narratives to abstract performance art.

We educate and inspire multiple generations of theater artists and citizens from all walks of life.

We provide arts education programs that promote life-long learning to a diverse community.

We celebrate the fundamental power of the theater to illuminate our common humanity.

GOAL | ARTISTIC INTEGRITY

THE ROYALE – Founders Theater, Season 28

Provide theatrical experiences that are challenging, thought-provoking, and engaging, reflecting a diversity of perspectives and voices.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Create productions of high artistic quality that reflect a variety of voices and perspectives.
  • Encourage new works, experimentation, and community discussions.
  • Use the power of theater to reflect, engage, and inspire the Charlottesville community.
  • Balance high production standards with risk-taking.

MEASURES:

  • Produce seven mainstage plays each season that reflect Live Arts’ primary representational goals.
  • Deliver four Foundry programs each year that spotlight new works and diverse voices.
  • Explore new community partnerships and opportunities to foster discussions connecting productions to current issues.

Summer Fun in Mini-Camps, 2019

Engage people of all ages with the performing arts through programming that is inspiring, inclusive, and supportive of the growth of future theater audiences and artists.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Maintain excellence in our summer camp and after school education programs.
  • Reach more young people through increased onsite and offsite engagement.
  • Provide opportunities for young people to work alongside adult mentors in the areas of performance and production.
  • Encourage adults to learn and engage in the performing arts through a robust variety of classes, production-based lectures, and talkbacks.

MEASURES:

  • Recruit a diverse team of experienced and capable teachers who share our commitment to creating safe spaces for children and adults to create, dream, and take risks.
  • Offer classes, camps, and production-based workshops, lectures, and talkbacks of interest to the community, and provide financial aid to those in need.
  • Build and expand partnerships with community organizations, houses of worship, and schools.
  • Provide at least one mainstage Mentor/Apprentice production annually.
  • Develop a pipeline from classroom to production that encourages individual growth and creates a stable of talent from which we can draw.

Provide an artistic home at Live Arts for a variety of community members offering meaningful participation in the creative process as audience members, volunteers, performers, designers, and support staff.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Exemplify an organizational culture of inclusion from board and staff to volunteers and students.
  • Provide opportunities for growth and learning through individual and team building.
  • Dynamically engage current and new audiences across all of our programs.
  • Create a safe space for all volunteers and audience members to engage with Live Arts.

MEASURES:

  • Assess and respond to the needs of our volunteer community as well as the community at large, with an eye toward the role that the arts can play in bridging divides and sharing stories.
  • Develop partnerships with other organizations and businesses in the Charlottesville area.
  • Ensure that Live Arts is fully accessible for volunteers of all abilities within the organization’s financial and physical resources (offering wheelchair accessibility, hearing enhanced, and sensory-friendly options when feasible).
  • Market to and educate the community about creative opportunities at Live Arts.

GOAL | BOARD and STAFF

Create a diverse and inspiring workplace, encouraging innovation, growth, and collaboration between and among staff and Board members.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Recruit a Board of Directors that is representative of the greater Charlottesville community and provides effective governance, resource development, and leadership.
  • Ensure that recruitment, hiring, and evaluation processes, for Live Arts’ Board, administrative and teaching staff, and artistic contributors are inclusive and reflective of best practices for human resources.
  • Support staff growth professionally.

MEASURES:

  • Provide annual inclusivity training for Live Arts staff, key volunteers, and Board members.
  • Host regular discussions with Live Arts volunteers, staff, and Board to collaboratively discuss organizational challenges and opportunities.
  • Provide financial and administrative support for staff to attend professional development programs.
  • Develop a human resources dashboard, including position descriptions, salary reviews, ongoing and regular evaluation processes, and a comprehensive employee manual.
  • Develop a comprehensive and ongoing Board training and evaluation process and a comprehensive Board manual.

Build upon our dedicated base of community support in order to grow revenue and ensure sustainability.

OBJECTIVES:

  • Develop and sustain a broad, diverse, and dedicated donor base.
  • Contribute to our Reserve Fund annually.
  • Build and maintain a strong endowment.
  • Responsibly plan for and invest in infrastructure and capital needs to ensure that Live Arts is a safe, efficient, creative place to make and watch theater.

MEASURES:

  • Build a robust and sustainable major donor engagement plan.
  • Continue to contribute to the Reserve Fund each year.
  • Develop strategic facilities plan to address production, staffing, educational, organizational, and accessibility needs.
  • Ensure that earned income and contributed income are balanced to secure the financial wellbeing of the organization.
